flea marketing is the best.

Annie small

So, I have to say I had a pretty awesome Saturday. My mother, sister and niece came in to town and we were able to spend the day together. We ate some pretty awesome pizza, then hit up some flea markets, had some Andy's Frozen Custard, and then did some more thrifting. Good times.

The photo above is of my niece Annie with a really cool vintage green travel bag we found for Erin.

A D700 kind of Thanksgiving.

Photo
I have to say that I am one freaking excited guy right now. I just purchased myself a brand new D700! I have been looking at this camera for quite some time and finally got to a point where I felt like it was time to pull the trigger and get it. Erin and I have been talking quite a bit about our plans for photography, where we want to be in the next year, and have come up with a lot of exciting stuff, and are looking forward to trying it all. We have ideas from shoots we want to do, clients we want to work with, to books, and beyond. It's going to be a fun ride.

Speaking of Erin, I got to spend the the holiday with her and her family. Its always such a pleasure to hang out with these peeps. We were able just to get away for a while and relax and just spend a lot of quality time with them.  Here are a few photos I snapped while we were away!

city.works

city works.city works.
A few days ago, I took my camera out with just my 50mm lens, left it at f1.4 and shot. I didn't come away with much that I was super excited about, except these two images. I was showing them to Erin, and as we were talking, she thought it would be a unique series if I continued to capture frames that focused on the linear aspect of city works, but at the same time used the curves of the pipes and fittings around them. I have to say I love the idea, and I am pretty excited to get out there and shoot more!

What do you all think? Thoughts? Suggestions? Am I doing something thats already been done before?

kaleidoscope

kaleidoscope kaleidoscope

I have been doing some work for a store here in town called Kaleidoscope, where we have been grabbing some shots of the store for their new website. It's a really cool store that has a lot of local history. They will be selling these shirts soon on the website!

On another note, Erin and I have been making some plans that I am soooo excited to share with everyone. Want to know what they are? Too bad, you're going to have to wait. We will be blogging about this soon. Wednesday.

Hope you all have been doing well. Whats new with you?

Red Velvet Art (dot) com update photos!

erin*rva erin*rva elsie*rva
I had the pleasure of being able to work with Erin and Elsie, some of the girls from Red Velvet Art . We were taking shots for their product update they released yesterday! A lot of fun was to be had! Anyway, please take a moment, go check out the website and see all the really great stuff they have available!

As you can tell, we were being super serious while we were shooting. Down to business and only business.
Ha, not really. Here are some of the goofy moments caught on film.

erin and rva

I love overcast days, and I think one of the reasons why I like them so much is because of the light that they provide. There is just something really unique about how even the light is, and how deep and rich you can get the colors to be. No need for artificial light. The shots just feel so natural, so calm. I love this frame of Erin, she is so much fun to take photos of.

Set up for this shot was easy: overcast day, 50mm, f1.8, nikon d200

Also shot with Erin and Elsie for the RVA update that is happening today. Check out the site around 7pm and you'll see a lot of fun stuff!!

setup: alien bee set at 1/8th in softbox camera left. alien bee set at 1/16th shot through umbrella camera right.

erin went red!!

My lovely girlfriend Erin decided to become a redhead. I have to say I enjoy it quite a bit. Anyway, everyone was itching to see it, so we snapped a few photos.

Please take a moment and go check out her blog. She's quite the photographer as well!

joshua and candace

I really don't claim to be a wedding photographer, but every once in a while, friends of mine like to get married and they ask me to shoot their weddings. I am so happy to do this because I get to be a part of their special day and help document the big day.

These frames are from the wedding of my friends Joshua and Candace. I had a lot of fun with them! The location was great, the people were a blast. And I think we came away with some great images and memories!

mackenzie

I really enjoy getting to work with my friend Mackenzie, because most of the time it is work that we are doing for fun, and trying to make a learning process. We wanted to push ourselves to make some great images. I wanted shoot in some new ways, work on some different lighting techniques, and just learn. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do, because this is where I want to continue to go with my style. More to come on that front soon.

As for now, let me know what you think!

photos from my phone

As a photographer, there always seems to be a time that you feel like everything you shoot begins to look and feel the same. You start feeling complacent, and you never take the time to push yourself and try something to make yourself a better photographer. Anyway, I have been feeling like this a bit and have been working on some personal projects and shooting things that I have been wanting to work on, and doing it strictly for me. So I can feel creative and feel like I am really pushing myself.

So this brings me to one of my projects that I am really excited about. Inspired by Chase Jarvis and his mentality that the best camera is the one that's with you, I have started a photo blog called "Photos From My Phone", where I will be posting a photo from my iphone at least every day or couple days. For me it's just a way to always be looking at the world around me, trying to see it in a new light, and making photos. I always have my phone with me, so why not capture my life with the camera.

I also want this to be a place where you can express your creativity. I would love it if you would want to link your own photos in the comments section of the posts. You carry your phone everywhere... and most likely it has a camera on it. Use it, make something new. Enjoy the process. Extend your creativity. Try something different.

So please take a moment, and check the blog out. Bookmark it if you like it, and start contributing to the community! You guys rock!
